Chapter 9

Gregarious Gaurav

“He will hail from behenji’s state and his name will begin with ‘G’” was another pandit’s prediction of my future husband. And then came Gaurav–“G for Gaurav”, from Agra. My mother was excited and the pandit approved of the match.

Gaurav Kapoor was a pucca Punjabi munda, settled in Toronto for over 4 years, originally from Agra, and had an elder married sister settled in the US.

“But Ma, we were looking for a match in Delhi and NCR na? When did Toronto shift to Delhi-NCR?” I was still trying to cope with the last disastrous episode and a life in “Canaeda” was not in the realm of my imagination.

“Arrey, I didn’t send him a request. He has liked your profile on Simplymarry.com, and your brother is in Toronto, so he could meet Gaurav and then we shall decide whether or not to take this alliance forward.” My mother had decided to compromise a little as efforts to hunt down a changa Punjabi munda in Delhi-NCR had borne no fruit.

“Okay … so if all goes well and Gaurav Kapoor is the one, then Papa and you and Rajat and bhabhi and my husband and I … all will be neighbours in Toronto, right? I will be saved from the torture of preparing meals everyday. Breakfast, lunch, dinner with you or bhabhi … hahaha …” I wasn’t expecting this alliance to move any further but, as usual, my intuition failed me. Gaurav was a good-looking, tall, broad-built 33-year-old man and my mother didn’t delay sharing his profile and pictures with my brother, Rajat Kannan, in Toronto.

Rajat liked Gaurav and, after discussions at home, it was decided that Rajat would contact Gaurav and invite him for a cup of coffee. (Yawn!)

“Gaurav Kapoor? Hmm … There is a VJ with the same name na? I must admit Swati, all the guys you have met have really nice names.” I agreed with Ritu’s impression. Rohit Tandon was my favourite of all the names.

“Yeah, though most of them weren’t so nice, after all. I agree with Shakespeare. What’s in a name? I did have faith in one name though, Guru Nanakji’s, and hence decided to pay Him a visit. I had lied to Nikhil about my trip to the Golden Temple and now the situation had forced me to make it a reality.

My parents also wanted to bribe the Almighty and so we set out on the holy trip. Just after I met Guru Nanakji and complained to Him endlessly about my ongoing struggles, I received a phone call. It was an unknown number and seemed to be an international call.

“Hello … ?” It was a suspicious hello and my intuition said that this was the Canaeda guy.

“Hello … is this Swati? Hi …”

“Yes, I am Swati. Er … may I know who this is, please?”

“This is Gaurav. Swati, is this a good time to talk? Rajat gave me your number and I thought we could chat once, before I meet Rajat.” Gaurav had a great voice.
